After a host of distractions in April–taxes, apartment hunting, buying a van with a ramp and driver’s transfer seat–we are ready to get back on track to put together a campaign to do a NYC to DC trip this summer. Gracie and I will be doing a small dress rehearsal today with the help of Ken Jones in the supporting role of van driver. We’re off on what would have been the second day of our cross-country trip: Jersey City to Westfield, a 24-mile trip. Weather today is cloudy with temperature in the 60s. You can follow our progress in real time in the “live-tracking” page. Departing between 9 and 10 am.
The trip to Westfield, NJ went very well…that is, except for the second bridge on Truck Route 1&9 between Jersey City and Newark. Gracie and I went together over the first bridge, and then I let her ride in the van while I continued on. Leaving the adjacent park and starting our trek up the first bridge, Gracie keeps looking back wondering why Ken (driver and shooting this video) is not coming with us.
In this video, Gracie and I are coming off the first bridge, and then I let her ride with Ken when we stop next to the blue van at the gas station. I continue on until I run out of sidewalk at the other side. No way out, so I backed part way over the bridge until I could turn the scooter around. From there we had to drive over to Newark before resuming the trip.
Here are a few photos from Thursday’s trip from Jersey City to Westfield: coming down Montgomery Street in JC, a view of the Route 1&9 bridges to Newark, and us at our destination in Westfield. A pretty good first day.
